A week of Home Page feature highlights!

by Home Page – April 7, 2018

The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

On the Radar – Run, Hide, Fight!
With the increasing occurrence of active shooter/active threat incidents nationwide, many people are looking to learn how to prepare themselves in case they find themselves in this situation. The average police response to an incident can be 5-6 minutes and even much longer in more rural areas. In a situation such as this, it becomes incumbent upon you, the individual, to be proactive to protect yourself and possibly others around you. These incidents have happened at nearly any type of location you can think of: businesses, churches, schools, shopping malls, restaurants, open venues, etc. Unfortunately, we know it will happen again. Let’s think about what we can do to prepare.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recommends the following response protocol: Run, Hide, Fight. This protocol gives you options to choose as your response based on your specific circumstances and information at hand.
The 2018 Tioga County Sports Hall of Fame!
The Tioga County Sports Hall of Fame inducted 14 new members on Saturday, March 31 at their 33rd annual banquet held out at the Tioga County Fairgrounds.

Former athletes from Wellsboro, Mansfield, North Penn, Liberty, Cowanesque Valley, Williamson, and Elkland gathered and shared stories about their playing days and their favorite memories. Tim Frazier started the event, then recognized the newly deceased Hall of Fame members, an introduction of Tioga County High School honorees, and the induction of the Class of 2018.
Laurel Mountain Dogs Search & Rescue
A dog’s nose can do what no other resource can. It can locate a missing child, follow a dementia patient that has wandered off, find trapped victims buried under snow or a collapsed building, assist at crime scenes and even locate drowning people.

Laurel Mountain Search and Rescue Team is a volunteer group in Tioga County. In the event of a missing person this group collaborates with law enforcement & the fire department. These hard-working citizens perform training exercises with trailing and air scent dogs on a variety of terrain.
The BURNOUT Burrito Challenge
According to the National Day Calendar, National Burrito Day is observed annually on the first Thursday in April. In honor of National Burrito Day, Home Page Sports Director Ed Weaver went to Johnny’z HOT ROD Cafe to be the first person to attempt the Burnout Burrito Challenge.

The Burnout Burrito at Johnny’z HOT ROD Cafe consists of a 13-inch flour tortilla, refried beans, brown rice, black beans, slow roasted beef, pulled pork, crumbled bacon, crumbled tortilla chips, onions, jalapeño peppers, and cheddar jack cheese, topped with Johnny’z “Hottest Ride Sauce.”

For the challenge Ed had 10 minutes to consume the Burnout Burrito with only a bottle of water and two cups of sour cream.
Ag Happenings: Making Maple Syrup
Recently, students and parent volunteers in the agriculture department have started sap boiling at the high school. The FFA Chapter won a grant to start their business. Their setup includes an evaporator, holding tank, taps, and a few buckets. Students help to collect the sap from the buckets. The parent volunteers helped with the setup of the operation and the boiling of the sap. However, this year has not been good for sap. With the weather being cold, sap has not run as much. The sugar content of the sap is lower than normal.

Seeing as this is the first year for the new evaporator and with the weather being the way it is, the students and volunteers have not made a lot of maple syrup. However, once they produce more maple syrup in upcoming years they plan to give it to the school board and possibly sell it. When asked what their favorite thing about maple syrup was, the students replied with pancakes.
