by Home Page – November 4-5, 2017

It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

Hornets top North Penn, 36-7
When head coach Matt Hildebrand joined the football coaching staff in 2007, fresh out of Mansfield University, Wellsboro was coming off a 4-6 season and finished 5-5. A decade later, Hildebrand completed his third undefeated regular season in five years as head coach with a 36-7 win over rival North Penn-Mansfield on Friday, October 27.

The win was also the Hornets’ sixth consecutive win in the Morton F. Jones Memorial Trophy game, and their 37th win overall since the rivalry started back in 1962.

Movin’ Together: But Weight, There’s More!
As we practice strength training, it is good to heed the advice of Wayne Wescott. “From a physical perspective alone, strength training produces a number of important benefits. First, muscle fibers become larger and stronger, which increases their ability to produce force. Secondly, tendons and ligaments and bones become denser and stronger, which increases their ability to withstand stress. These positive adaptations result in a strong and injury – resistant muscular system. It is recommended that strength be performed in a slow and controlled manner. The preferred breathing pattern is to inhale during lowering movements and to exhale during lifting movements. Remember not to hold your breath during movements or grip your weights which can raise your blood pressure. When you improve muscular strength you automatically improve muscle endurance.” (Be Strong: Strength Training for Muscular Fitness for Men and Women) Also keep in mind the importance of using correct form. Injury can occur even during simple motions and with little weight if we use the wrong form!

Flowers Donated for Young Science
“Thank you, Akikos!” erupts a ring of smiling preschoolers sitting in circle-time. Every boy and girl gratefully grasp a single, thorn-free rose given to them by Joe Hewitt. “It’s always nice to help out in the community,” smiles Joe.

It’s time for early STEM learning at the Wellsboro Montessori Children’s Center thanks to generous floral donations by Akikos Floral Arts. “The kids love looking at real life objects instead of just pictures,” explains Dolly Boder, lead preschool teacher. Their natural curiosity for experimentation and figuring out how things work sets them on solid ground for learning STEM principles in this way.

SportsCast: Volleyball District Finals
Northern Tier League volleyball teams Canton, Cowanesque Valley, North Penn-Liberty and Wellsboro all competed for District IV championships at Williamson High School, with North Penn-Liberty and Canton won their respective classes.

In the Class AA match, North Penn-Liberty brought their perfect 19-0 record up against rival Wellsboro. After meeting twice during the regular season, with Liberty winning both matches a combined 6 sets to 1, Thursday’s match was one for the ages as it took five sets to decide a winner.

While Wellsboro ends their season at 19-5, Liberty (20-0) advances back to the PIAA State tournament for the second straight year, where they will take on District II champion Holy Redeemer.
