Hornets cruise past North Penn-Liberty
The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team won their 130th game under head coach Todd Outman with a 67-40 win over North Penn-Liberty on Saturday, January 14.
“We talk a lot about trusting the process,” said Wellsboro assistant coach Chase Kriner. “Teams get real excited to play us and I think teams come out with a lot of adrenaline and play hard. Our key is we train and we talk about trusting the process, playing hard, weathering storms and in the second half it shows in our games.”
Hornets outlast Athens, 61-49
The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team took possession of second place in the NTL Large School Division with a 61-49 win over Athens on Monday, January 16.
“Coach Chase Kriner told the kids last year it would’ve been 50-50 about how the kids would’ve finished that game as to whether we would’ve pulled it out or not,” said head coach Todd Outman. “This year these guys are really believing and when times get tough they just find a way to get the job done and they did that again tonight.”
Lady Hornets top NP-Liberty, 60-23
Three Lady Hornets scored in double figures as the Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team defeated North Penn-Liberty 60-23 on Tuesday, January 17 in Wellsboro.
“We came off a tough loss last night (Monday) and I was worried about us rebounding and we did,” said Wellsboro head coach John Davis. “They played hard and there’s still some stuff we have to clean up. We have a home game this Thursday, but it was a good team win, they played hard, and I couldn’t be happier.”
MU faces Lock Haven in Double Header
Brielle Kelly scored a game-high 19 points for Mansfield, but a late comeback fell short in a 54-46 loss against visiting Lock Haven Wednesday night at First Citizens Community Bank Court at Decker Gymnasium.
Malik Carter scored a career-high 32 points and pulled down 19 rebounds to lead Mansfield to an 89-82 win over Lock Haven in a key PSAC East matchup Wednesday evening on First Citizens Community Bank Court in Decker Gymnasium.
“We knew it would be game or runs and it was,” said head coach Pat Zipfel. “Malik Carter was just unstoppable and really picked us up when we were down.”
North Penn-Liberty wrestling tops Wellsboro
The North Penn-Liberty Mounties picked up a win over rival Wellsboro on the wrestling mat on Thursday, January 19. The Mounties won 9 matches on the night en route to a 53-13 win.
NPL’s Carl Dinger pinned Wellsboro’s Connor Ramsey at 132 lbs., Cameron Andrews pinned Wellsboro’s Caleb Sinker at 145 lbs., and Justin Kriner pinned Wellsboro’s Robert Brown at 285 lbs.
George Kyle (126 lbs.), Riley Walker (138 lbs.), Judson Wise (160 lbs.), Caleb Heater (170 lbs.), Hunter May (182 lbs.), and Roger Learn (106 lbs.) all scored forfeits.
Wellsboro’s Kaleb Smith won by forfeit at 220 lbs., Hunter Brown won a 11-1 major decision over Coby Knipe at 195 lbs., and Jared Moreno won a 7-2 decision over Casey Amaral at 160 lbs.
There were double forfeits at 113 lbs. and 120 lbs.
