Coach and players share outlook on the new season
The 2017 boys tennis season starts this week, and the Hornets are ready to be back on the courts.
Head Coach: Margery Hoffman (3rd year, 7-18)
2016 Season Record: 4-9
Key Returners: Nate Redell, Noah Colton, Noah Fitch
Player to Watch: Nate Redell
Wellsboro has struggled in their first two years under coach Hoffman, but this year, unlike the past two, the Hornets have a wealth of upperclassmen with experience. The Hornets return four of their top five players from the 2016 season, including sophomore Nate Redell, who led the team with 7 wins last season.
Also returning are senior Noah Colton, and juniors Noah Fitch, Ryan Stough, and Tanner Runyan. Colton, Fitch, and Stough combined for 8 singles wins, and the doubles team of Stough and Runyan went 6-2 last season.
As far as the NTL and local teams go, Galeton could be the top local favorite according to Coach Hoffman.
“Galeton is as strong as ever. We expect them to be good at this year. Cowanesque is weaker this year, they lost quite a few seniors and their coach so we’re looking to put some more wins up against Cowanesque.”
One thing Coach Hoffman is looking forward to is having more team depth this season. With 11 members from last year’s team returning, and even new faces like Josiah Hill and Casey Hoover, the Hornets will have more flexibility in their line up this season.
“My goal is to play nine players each time and not have singles and doubles repeat so we can have dedicated singles and doubles players will serve us well going into Districts, which we are looking to qualify for for the first time.”
The Hornets begin their season on Tuesday, March 14 at Packer Park against Towanda.
