THE 2014 LAUREL FESTIVAL RECAP

Thousands of people from all over Pennsylvania gathered in Wellsboro for the 73rd Annual Laurel Festival. The streets were lined with excited spectators as the parade proceeded through town. This year’s theme for the parade floats was “Uniting with Nature.” Over 110 vendors came to sell their wares and homemade goods.

Gabrielle Antonicelli of Jersey Shore was named the 2014 Laurel Queen and received an academic scholarship of $1,000. She was also awarded the Miss Congeniality Award. First runner-up was Ally Morgret of Hershey.

UNSUNG FESTIVAL HEROES

The Laurel Festival is one of the summer’s most unforgettable events. However, there are many people who go unnoticed. The volunteers who clean up trash, fold up chairs, and restore our town are the real unsung heroes. Wellsboro Home Page would like to personally thank the following people for their hard work and dedication:

We’d like to thank James Nichols, who has been helping to clean for over 20 years. Jim Paxson has also volunteered for years, and led the food vendors clean-up. This year he announced his retirement from the cleaning detail. (Thank you Jim for all your hard work over these many years!)

Finally, Wellsboro Home Page would like to extend a special thanks to the Chamber of Commerce, the Wellsboro Borough, the Wellsboro Girls Basketball Team, and everyone else who volunteered their time and efforts to restore the town to it’s natural beauty. Without all of you, the Laurel Festival would not be possible.

JOIN THE FIGHT! RELAY FOR LIFE!

The Annual Relay for Life will take place at the Whitneyville fair grounds this weekend.

The relay will start Friday, June 27, at 2 p.m. and continue until Saturday, June 28, at 2 p.m. The relay will include games, activities, prizes, fundraisers, food, raffles and ceremonies. These ceremonies are to honor those who have lost their battle, those who are currently in the fight and those who have overcome cancer through a candle lighting ceremony.

Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner, Laura Balmer, gives us a tour of the new Cancer Center at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. Cancer patients have also given their input for the design of the center. Some of its features include patient chairs that have massages, personalized temperature settings, reclining options, televisions and Sirius Radio.

BELOVED OLD PIANOS REVIVED!

Friday’s feature on Wellsboro Home Page showcases the beautiful, hand painted pianos located downtown on Main Street. These pianos have been donated and painted by members of the community. The goal is for this to be a way to bring the community together through music. The pianos will be here until the July 4th weekend, so come and play!

A dueling pianos performance will take place on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Warehouse Theater in the Deane Center.
