CONGRATULATIONS, WELLSBORO GRADUATES!

The Wellsboro High School celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2014 this past Friday night. It was a time of excitement and reflection as students, staff, parents, and family members came together in honor of the graduating class. There were various speakers throughout the night to commemorate this special occasion. The keynote speaker chosen by the students was Mr. Lou Prevost. The Salutatorian address was given by Aiyana Kalheart, and the Valedictorian address was given by Tyler Chamberlain. Over a two dozen scholarships were awarded to a number of students over the course of the night.

THE LAST CLASS OF NORTH PENN

In the wake of North Penn High School’s doors closing, their Class of 2014 and the community came together one last time to celebrate the spirit of the school.

The students proceeded triumphantly into The Pit, an iconic and fitting location for the ceremony. After the invocation and welcome, the students commemorated the school’s spirit with a unique observance – the lighting of a unity candle.

This was followed by an address from the salutatorian, Victoria Bubacz. The Valedictorian, Rebekah Erway, also spoke to her class, encouraging them to not hold onto bitter feelings as they move on, but rather to forgive and remember – it’s the people who make North Penn special.

THE SUMMER’S BIGGEST EVENT IS HERE!

Do you know when the Laurel Festival started and why? The first Laurel Festival began in 1938, when one man – resident Larry Woodin – wanted others to come and see the beauty of the Grand Canyon of the East! He persuaded the Chamber of Commerce to publicize it as a natural wonder of Tioga County.

Along with some help from the Wellsboro Lions Club, the first festival was held and named after Pennsylvania’s state flower – the Mountain Laurel.

This week-long series of events includes a variety of musical concerts, a pet parade, a 10-K footrace, a juried arts & craft fair, queens pageant, and the traditional two-hour Laurel Parade.

LAUREL HIKE & MYSTERY VISTA

Where’s your favorite vista? Some say Leonard Harrison on the East Rim, others say Colton Point on the West Rim – but on today’s feature, Tim Morey, our outdoor correspondent takes you to one of his favorite places to view the canyon.

Along with Tim and company is local plant expert, Chris Firestone who shared information about the mountain laurel, winter green, and white pine during the walk. (The mountain laurel is going to be blooming the next few weeks!)
