The MU Police Academy

Local police program trains cadets to serve and protect

by Amiee Jones – October 6, 2017

An exciting training opportunity exists in Tioga County! For those pursuing a future in law enforcement, the Mansfield University Municipal Police Academy is a perfect option. Chief Scott Henry took some time to explain the purpose of the academy and what it entails.

This feature comes at a particularly significant time for the academy, because Chief Henry was just recently appointed to his position, and the current cadets are only one week from graduating from the program! Chief Henry has faced a myriad of work and training experiences that have led to this position, and his stepping in to this important role is not the only thing changing for the academy. The course hours are increasing significantly to accommodate for more hands-on, field training. This training curriculum includes education in the areas of: criminal law and investigation, vehicle codes, accident investigation procedures, crisis management, defense tactics, fire arms, and more. With a fantastic staff of instructors, cadets who attend the University’s Municipal Police Academy are receiving top-notch preparation for their field of work.
Chief Henry spoke to the Academy’s emphasis on raising funds so that tuition costs can remain as low as possible. The desire is to continue allowing the program to be available to as many interested parties as possible. The application process is explained on the Academy website for prospective cadets, along with a list of admission requirements.
Additionally, we had the benefit of being a “fly on the wall” for an Academy inspection! During this exercise, cadets are checked over for neatness of appearance. Any errors are sentences with sets of push-ups. After the inspection we were able to speak with three of the current cadets. Some of their reflections included the exhilaration of the driving course, and the challenge of learning all of the vehicle codes. Also, their future plans after graduation next week. Some are applying for job openings, while others heading to the State Police Academy for further training.
