Fair Week 2018: Michael Felk’s Tinsmithing Show
A truly unique experience awaits you at the Tioga County Fair. This opportunity invites you to look back in time, and appreciate the origins of modern production, as we know it. A look at the initiation of a versatile, durable, and lightweight material, which started with humble, yet innovative origins. This fascinating skill is that of tinsmithing.
A substance and trade that would rarely cross our mind, tin has opened the doors in countless industries, including: aviation, appliances, automotive, etc. Previous to the development of tin goods, materials such as ceramics and iron were most widely utilized. A lighter, more durable option was long overdue!
Tinsmith, Michael Felk, is sharing this fascinating history at the fair this week. His masterful grasp of the events that originated the tin trade is presented in an interactive demonstration, in which he creates a product/tool right before your eyes. The knowledge and information he shares, along with his trade expertise, create a captivating experience. The original tools that are used in his demonstration give an accurate depiction of how a tinsmith of the past created goods. In addition, Michael encourages participation from the crowd as he invites them to guess what he is making and what authentic tin items were used for. Those who make it through the rounds of questions are rewarded with a handmade tin product of their choice! (Michael hand creates this prize for you personally.)
Tinsmith, Michael Felk’s demonstration is educational and entertaining. You will leave with a better grasp of our history, as well as, a realization of how so many industries and products evolved to the point that they are at today. And, if you are fortunate, you will leave with a one-of-a-kind prize! This display is certainly worth checking out!
