Tapping 2 College!

PSU student conquers college tuition costs with tap dancing!

by Corrin Binford

College tuition prices have increased dramatically in recent years. Government funding and scholarships, however, have decreased. This has left many students graduating with a large debt. Penn State’s current 2013-2014 in state tuition and fees cost is approximately $17,000. This price does not include room and board. Recently, we spoke with Joshua Johnson, a Penn State student who started tap dancing on the New York City subways to help pay for his tuition costs.

Joshua story begins in Harlem, New York, where drugs, violence, and basketball were the “cool” things to do – not tap dancing. Joshua was able to find his identity through tap dancing and never gave up on his dream of attending college. When he was accepted to Penn State, he knew that was where he wanted to be. His next challenge was to find the money to pay for that dream.

Joshua began traveling home to New York City every weekend to tap dance on the subways and collect donations to pay for his schooling. He also used the money to assist his family when they were evicted from their home. Joshua has become an international inspiration as he demonstrates what hard work and determination can do.

Through his story, Joshua hopes that people will have faith and work past their fears. “Impossible is just a big word used by little people.” says Joshua. “We all have goals and dreams. Anything is possible as long as you don’t take no for an answer.”

Joshua will be graduating this spring with a Bachelor’s Degree in Telecommunications. If you would like to follow along on his journey, visit his website at tapping2college.com.
