Step Outdoors – The Origin Story

A story of community, ingenuity and outdoor adventures!

by Heather Weiner – April 4, 2017

Today, we speak with Tim Morey and Pete Herres, co-founders of Step Outdoors, which is a group of clubs, individuals, organizations and public agencies working together to bring opportunities and activities to area residents and visitors.

“It’s about working together,” explains Morey.

The three main partners involved in Step Outdoors are the state parks, Wellsboro Parks & Recreation and the Army Corps of Engineers. “And then,” adds Morey, “There are so many other organizations and members that are constantly evolving and changing as they see value and benefit; and they have different things to bring to the table and share.”

Pete Herres describes the history of Step Outdoors as beginning in the late nineties: “There was a need in the Wellsboro area for us to get together with all of the recreational programers to see if we couldn’t coordinate programming . . . We found out that we were actually competing with each other, so we basically scheduled a meeting.” That meeting, while attended by representatives from just three partners, illustrated the type of cooperative attitude and ability to work across agency lines that would lead to the formation of Step Outdoors.

The secret to bringing everyone together was mutual respect. By coming together and discussing each program’s calendar, they ultimately found that the programs had much to offer each other, especially in the areas of scheduling and promotion. By working collaboratively, they could make each other better. At their meetings, they are continually exploring new ideas and looking at ways the organizations can support each other.

“Once we took that first initial step, we never turned back,” Herres notes.

Their major annual events include: Winterfest, the Winter Outing Series and First Day Hike, Winter Celebration, Springfest, TRYathalon, and the Ives Run Trail Challenge.

The secret ingredients? Cooperation and fun!
