Fourth Quarter Surge Falls Short Against Division-Leading West Chester

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Mansfield used a 15-2 run in the fourth quarter to pull within seven points, but it would not be enough as division-leading West Chester held on for a 78-65 win Tuesday night in PSAC East play at Decker Gymnasium.

Tianna Jackson led four Mountaineers in double digits with 17 points, scoring 12 in the second half alone. Mary Kate Rumbaugh recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Brielle Kelly hit double-figure scoring for the 10th time this season with 12 points and also added seven rebounds. Bella Ricci came off the bench to score 11 points.

Porscha Speller and Alexis Anderson combined to score 41 points for West Chester (4-7, 4-3 PSAC). Tori Smick added 16 points and Madison Torrensin 12 points as both pulled down eight boards each.

Kelly opened the game with a blocked shot and Jackson hit a 3-pointer on the Mounties first possession to take an early lead, but it would be short lived. West Chester jumped out to a nine-point lead before ending the quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 23-10.

The Rams outscored Mansfield (2-9, 0-7 PSAC) 21-14 in the second quarter to carry a 44-24 lead into the halftime.

West Chester continued to keep its distance in the third quarter maintaining a 20-point lead for much of the period.

Mansfield refused to quit however, using a 17-4 run to bring a 20-point deficit down to just seven points at 69-62. Jackson scored seven points during the run including a trey to bring the score within seven points. The Rams would prove to be too much and held on for the win.

West Chester scored 21 points off 17 Mansfield turnovers and racked up 17 second-chance points in the game.

The Mountaineers travel to Cheyney on Friday.

The Mountaineers extended the lead to 69-50 on a 3-pointer by Malik Carter with just under eight minutes to play before the Golden Rams went on a torrid comeback, taking a 83-82 lead with a minute remaining in regulation.

The score was tied again at 100-100 with just under two minutes to play when Malik Carter hit a free throw to put the Mountaineers up by one point.

After a West Chester turnover, Tamanosky scored on a layup extending the lead to 103-100 and added two more free throws to give Mansfield a five-point lead with 30 seconds left.

Carter scored 22 points for the Mountaineers with Gerasimo Koutoufas adding a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Cedrick Powell added 16 points and nine rebounds.
