Movin’ Together – Slip Slop Slap Seek Slide

Protect your skin with these 5 words!

by Sara Vogt – June 25, 2018

This month’s topic on Movin’ Together covers protecting our skin! In this broadcast, we are looking for ways to enjoy the sun’s rays – safely.

In 1981 Australia launched one of the most successful health campaigns in their history. Slip! Slop! Slap! The slogan is the core message of the Cancer Council’s SunSmart program and has become part of the Australian language. Members of the Cancer Council of Australia were concerned with the rising rates of skin cancer, and especially melanoma.

However, now decades later, the Cancer Council believes its Slip! Slop! Slap! campaign has played a vital role in the dramatic shift in sun protection attitudes and behavior. According to the study published online in the International Journal of Cancer, the rate of melanoma cases has fallen from 25 per 100,000 in 1996 to 14 per 100,000 in 2010 among people aged 20 to 24.

The slogan encouraged Australians to slip on a shirt, slop on SPF 30 or higher broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen (at least 20minutes before sun exposure) and slap on a hat, the broader, the better!
Later on, they added two more words to the slogan, seek and slide. Seek shade and slide on sunglasses.

They even employed a Seagull named Sid to spread their message to adults and children alike. To watch Sid singing his song, follow this link!

Here in America, If you’re going to be in the sun, the American Cancer Society also recommends the Slip! Slop! Slap! And Wrap! Their method of prevention. Slip on a shirt, slop on 30 SPF (or higher) broad-spectrum sunscreen, slap on a hat, and wrap on sunglasses before going out in the sun. Presently skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. In fact, more skin cancers are diagnosed in the US each year than all other cancers combined. The number of skin cancer cases has been going up over the past few decades.

Hopefully we will see a decline in skin cancers in American too as we apply slip, slop, slap, seek and slide to our lives.

Our gift package this month is one of protection and fun while in the sun!

One of our employees here at Home Page, Stacey Dondey, designed our new logo for Movin’ Together so now the hats and jackets are a part of the package for this giveaway!

When Stacey finished the logo we traveled to Moose’s Enterprises in Sylvania and spoke with Jerod and Tayce Renzo about getting the logo on items to wear. They assisted us in choosing our colors of blue, digitizing the vector file, and stitching onto the products. At Moose’s Enterprises, they do it all right there in their shop to perfection and customer satisfaction! With great patience, I might add!

Look for our special Facebook post and see how you can win this month’s tools! The package is a Movin’ Together hat and jacket and a jar of facial sunscreen by Daylogic. This package is being sponsored by Moose’s Enterprises and Movin’ Together.
