Local team takes First-In-Class in WMWR

Keck & Wimbrough place 4th overall in Waste Management Winter RallySprint

by Andrew Moore & Brady Connolly – February 20, 2017

The 2017 Waste Management Winter RallySprint took place on Saturday, February 18th and a total of 15 racing crews participated in this year’s event. Competitors traveled from 9 different states to compete across a total of 44 stage miles over the course of the day and raced through mud, ice and snow.

The difficult terrain claimed four competitors, with only 11 finishing all 5 stages. (For a complete list of entries and the event results, visit the official event website here.)

All of the drivers, crews, event staff and volunteers gathered at the Whiteneyville Fairgrounds at the end of the day to present this year’s winners. Kevin Turner and Matt Rhoads took first place overall with a total score of 1:22:44. Sean Burke and Nathan Werner took second with 1:24:06. Matthew Chemelewski and Pete Sandy finished third with 1:24:14.

Local duo Jeremy Keck and Chris Wimbrough (both from Wellsboro) finished first in class and fourth overall with a score of 1:24:18. Keck and Wimbrough have participated in numerous rally events over the past few years and they have a noble cause behind their “need for speed.” The duo’s racing team, Reaper Motorsports, aims to raise awareness and support for our servicemen and women. Reaper Motorsports has contributed to Goodies For Our Troops and encourages our community to stand behind them.

“We love our troops,” says Keck. “We feel they don’t get the support [they deserve.] We gotta do something for these guys. They support our freedom, they give us the opportunity to do what we love, like rally. They volunteer to put their lives on the line for us.”

Wimbrough himself is a veteran, having served in Iraq, and holds a special appreciation for Goodies For Our Troops.

“Goodies For Our Troops is just amazing,” says Wimbrough. “I’ve been to Iraq twice now. Both times I was there 6 months and got a care package every month. It means a lot to me.”

Keck and Wimbrough expect to participate in the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally this summer and are currently looking for supporters and sponsors.
