Young ladies find fun & adventure at Hills Creek State Park
Mountain Laurel Girl Scout day camp was held July 24-27 at Hills Creek State Park. The camp was open to girls entering grades 1-12. Girls did not need to be scouts to attend camp. Each year the camp basis its activities on a new theme. This year’s theme was, “It’s About Time.”
Each unit picked a time-period with which they decorated their camp site, made a flag, designed costumes and created a song or cheer. The girls covered such time periods as ancient Egypt and the wild west. There were representations from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, & 90’s and into the future. According to sources, there were even some pirates!
Many of their activities were based on the badges that they earned during the week. The badges change each year, so every camp is a new and exciting learning experience. Like past summer camps, there are things the girls can always count. Swimming, singing, laughing, kayaking, archery, connecting with old friends and making new ones are always activities that the girls can count on during their camp experience.
And, of course, the campers will never forget the SWAPS! What are SWAPS? They are “special whatchamacallits affectionately pinned somewhere.” It is a small token of friendship that is exchanged between the girls.
The camp staff consisted of certified lifeguards and first aid personnel along with trained leaders, to keep it a fun and safe environment. The girls also enjoyed guest speakers who stopped by to share their expertise throughout the week.
