How the Standard American Diet Undermines True Hunger
It is almost impossible to correct our emotional eating habits if we do not address Toxic Hunger and food addictions. We need to become aware of the kinds of addictive foods that play havoc with the human digestive system. Having this knowledge will go a long way to reduce emotional eating to a minimum.
First, let us acknowledge what emotional eating looks like in our daily lives. If you’ve ever make room for dessert or ate a half gallon of ice cream when you are feeling down, you are experiencing emotional eating. Emotional eating is using food to make you feel better – eating to fill emotional needs – rather than to satisfy true hunger.
The majority of Americans derive 90 percent of their diet from animal-based and highly processed food. It is the high fat, refined sugar, salt, extracted oils and white bleached flour content in these foods that keeps our toxic hunger and food addictions active.
I am sure there are valid reasons to understand emotional eating on a deeper level. Knowing all the signals that precede emotional eating can be helpful. But if we do not change the addictive foods that we eat, all the great strategies used to help prevent EE will wear thin and most of us will revert back to our comfort food addictions.
The answer to help us cope with EE and for that matter improve our health in general is by eating a 80 to 90 percent “whole food” plant based diet. It is a lifestyle of eating based on fruits, vegetables, tubers, whole grains and legumes and excludes or minimizes animal products. The consumption of these whole plant foods will help restore true hunger while eliminating withdrawal symptoms and toxic hunger
Finally, one of the best and lasting deterrents to EE is having a true sense of well-being. When our body weight is normal and our energy level is high we will be less likely to reach for those unhealthy foods that are used by most people to cope with the emotional stresses in life.
