Behind the Sparkle: Citrine

Discover November’s birthstone & Bethany’s Black Friday Specials!

Citrine is yellow to reddish/orange variety of quartz. Traces elements of iron in the gems structure are responsible for its color. Citrine is actually quite rare in nature, with most of the world’s supply being heat-treated purple quartz, also known as Amethyst. It is even more rare when the gem shows both colors in one crystal, which are appropriately named “ametrine.”
In the days before modern gemology, citrine was often confused with yellow topaz, the alternate birthstone for November.

Quartz has been used in jewelry for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks carved rock quartz for ornaments that glistened in the sun, and the Romans wore rings adorned with huge amethysts.
Citrine’s attractive color, plus the durability and affordability, make it the top-selling yellow-to-orange gem today.
