Becoming Best Dressed

It’s time to start preparing for The Best Dressed Showcase!

by Stacey Dondey – June 20, 2018

“I love the opportunity to get dressed up,” Sara Pease said of the stunning Dickens ensemble she wore at the 2017 Best Dressed Contest. The intricate, seven-piece outfit inspired by the 1850’s weighs 35 pounds and incorporates an astounding 63 yards of ruffles.

Sara lives in Crab Orchard, WV and often returns to PA to visit family. This daring sewing project was launched after her aunt, Libby Occhino suggested in 2015 she get involved in a Dickens event at Linck Hill in Morris, PA. With the help of Karen Snuffer (who made 3 pieces) Sara was able the create an inspiring & historically accurate Dickens costume from authentic reproduction patterns she found at:

“I have always loved historical fashion,” she says. “The research for me was half the fun!” She was grateful, “for the opportunity to do something that I’ve dreamed about for so long & to share it with others.”

Sara glimpses what the life of a Victorian lady might have felt like when she wears the heavy costume. “It certainly is a time of manners and propriety. There were rules for how you did things and I find it fascinating to study them. Some of them seem quite ridiculous to our sense but some are still really good pieces of advice to follow today. Consider other people and work to make them comfortable and put them at ease and to be respectful,” said Sara.

Although she considered herself to be a beginner seamstress, she would not be dissuaded despite her physical challenges. Since the age of 13, Sara has been bravely living with POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome). Attending Wellsboro’s Dickens of a Christmas in costume was a dream come true for Sara. She continues to believe if the Lord wants her to do it, He will give her the strength she needs.

Sara Pease’s breathtaking costume will be on display in the Penn Wells Hotel lobby from Thanksgiving of this year until Dickens on December 1. More information on this year’s “Dickens of Christmas Best Dressed Showcase” is coming soon in a special feature with Christine Moore of Christine A. Moore Millinery.
